Subject

Opus sectile panel of Junius Bassus on a quadriga

Description

This opus sectile panel, made of colorful glass fragments, depicts Junius Bassus on a biga, or a chariot led by two horses. Junius Bassus is flanked by four men on horses as he leads the processus consularis, a procession that occurs with the appointment of a new consul. The scene was created for the basilica of Junius Bassus, on the Esquiline Hill, in the 4th century CE. Today the panel is kept in the collection of the Palazzo Massimo alle Terme in Rome.
