Title

Charioteer Mosaic

Subject

Mosaic panel depicting a charioteer and horse from Rome's four factions

Description

This mosaic represents a charioteer and horse from each of Rome's four factions: Veneta (blue), Russata (red), Prasina (green), and Albata (white). Each of the city's stables had their own color. The stable would provide competitors with everything they needed to race, and the competitor would represent their faction in the circus. Charioteers would flaunt tunics in their respective colors, and some emperors were even known to favor a particular faction.
