Gladiators Graffiti

Subject

Two examples of graffiti from a house in Lugdunum

Description

These are two examples of graffitti left on the wall of a house. They date to the second half of the 2nd century CE. We cannot say for sure but they are either secutors or murmillos. However, we know that their helmets covered their faces to protect from the trident reared by the retiarius and a metal crest was used to pull the net of the retiarius. Today they are preserved in the Musée gallo-romain de Fourvière, Lyon.
