Description
The Colosseum, also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre (Amphitheatrum Flavium), is a large arena built in the 1st century CE. Begun in 70 CE by Vespasian it was finished by his son Titus and inaugurated in 80 CE. It was the biggest amphitheatre in the Roman world, 189 m long and 156 m wide with four stories and a capacity for 50,000 spectators. The arena hosted spectacular public entertainments such as gladiator fights, wild animal hunts (venatiories), mock naval battles and public executions.
