The Circus Varianus
Description
The Circus Varianus is located near the church of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme and dates to the reign of Caracalla (211-17 CE). The track of the Circus was 577 m long and 132 m wide (superior to that of the Circus Maximus). This structure has been identified as the circus in which Elagabalus used to race "in hortis Spei Veteris" under his family name Varius (Historia Augusta, Elagabalus 14.5). It was connected by a porticus to the Amphitheatrum Castrense which is attributed to Elagabalus.
