Subject
The Gladiators Barracks in Pompeii
Description
The barracks for the gladiators were quadrangular portico located behind the stage of the Large which was originally designed as a space for the audience to stroll in during the intervals of the theatre shows. After the earthquake of 62 CE, the building changed its function and was turned into barracks for gladiators who were accommodated in the cells arranged along the sides of the quadriporticus. The barracks consisted of a series of rooms on two floors, which included the apartment of the lanista, stables, kitchens, and armouries to store the gladiators’ equipment.
