View 1/3 of a Circus Mosaic
Description
This mosaic captures the chaos of eight chariots racing in a circus. There are two representatives from the four factions: blue, green, red, and white. It appears as if one of the green and red charioteers have fallen in different areas of the composition. Both have fallen in what seems to be a pile of scrambled horses. Meanwhile the other six competitors proceed around the track as figures splash water onto the horses as they move along. Notably, there is an obelisk at the center of the track which is surrounded by water features that make up the central barrier. The spouts on the fountains appear to be in the form of fish. This mosaic gives us a vivid glimpse into the chaos and energy of chariot races in the empire.
