Charioteer Mosaic
Subject
Mosaic of a victorious charioteer from the 4th century CE
Description
This 4th century CE mosaic depicts a victorious charioteer commanding a quadriga (a four-horse chariot). Inscriptions throughout the mosaic help us name the charioteer and his horses. Along the top, next to his name, Marcianus, the word 'nicha' indicates that he was a champion, as does the victory palm he carries in his left hand. The word "Inluminator" adjacent to one of the horses is probably its name and the word "Getuli" probably indicates which group they belonged to. This mosaic is located in the National Museum of Roman Art, in Mérida Spain.
